boat gear and outfitting, La Rochelle
When we got our boat from the factory, we had ordered it with a square-top mainsail. Square-top versus Pinhead The “standard” sail in a pinhead sail, which is shaped like a triangle. A square-top sail is a trapezoid shape. The foot is wide and has a 90-degree angle on...

Time keeps ticking away and we slowly get closer to when Starry Horizons will be in the water.  We hit a big milestone this past week as we submitted our final list of options we want from the factory.   The amount of time we’ve had since Annapolis has been both an exercise...

The dingy and its outboard engine are a vital part of the cruising life, shuttling us to and from the shore, to other boats, and carrying all manner of items for us, from groceries to scuba/snorkel gear etc.  Choosing the right combination has taken a lot of time and research...

boat gear and outfitting, cruise ro, watermaker
While in the planning process of outfitting a blue water catamaran, we knew that it would be a multi-step process.  One of the most important steps that we took was to install a reverse osmosis watermaker.  We picked a Cruise RO watermaker, and five years later, we are...

Electricity.  It’s something we use every day, but it’s always been one of those mysteries of the world to me.  Volts, watts, hertz/frequency and many other terms all seem like they’re from a foreign language.  Sure, I took physics in high school...

boat gear and outfitting
One of the things that was quickly apparent to us when we were checking out the Helia at the Annapolis boat show was that the factory trampoline was not going to be suitable for us.  The trampoline was essentially a large, open net and quite “stretchy”, for lack of a...

boat gear and outfitting
Figuring out what kind of sails your boat needs is not always a straight-forward and simple question.  All sailboats need sails, right?  But each sailboat may have a different set of needs.  Most cruising boats come standard with a small headsail and a mainsail....

I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a nerd.  I like technology and while I’m not the most technologically advanced person in my family (here’s looking at you o’ brother of mine…) I think I come in at a solid second place.  Therefore, the...

Instagram post 2178603744034361862_7313427715 Today was hippo day! We took a two-hour cruise out of St Lucia, just an hour north of Richard's Bay. The water was high due to all the rain we've had, but we saw dozens of hippos out enjoying the flood. #africa #richardsbay #zululand #hippo #riverboat #womenwhosail #girlslovetravel #nikond750
Instagram post 2158262367006248793_7313427715 We made new friends today!!!! 😍This was our THIRD paid tour to swim with whale sharks (1 - Australia, 2-Maldives), but the first time we got the amazing experience we were looking for! With @22.south and @sakalav.diving, we went out bright and early this morning to look for whale sharks. There were just six of us on board and we had so many sightings! The whale sharks were feeding off the plankton that congregates in the waters of the Mozambique channel.#whalesharks #madagascar #sailingaroundtheworld #nosybe
Instagram post 2156638820001579500_7313427715 The Malagasy people are astounding sailors. Hundreds of local boats pass us by every day. Some motor loud engines, or paddle by with gentle splashes, but most glide by on the barest whisper of winds. It might be a skiff with a lone man and a fishing line, or a beamy vessel weighed down with building supplies. We have learned to recognize many of the boats by their sails; patchwork in various colors and patterns distinguish each boat. The boats feel ancient to us; archaic; prehistoric; timeless. They humble us. Thank you to our friend Lars for the picture. #fountainepajot #helia44 #madagascar #womenwhosail #sailingaroundtheworld #circumnavigation #nosybe #traditionalsailing #outrigger

Instagram post 2154227047520655230_7313427715 Yesterday was one of those days where you find yourself doing something ridiculous and think 'geez....this is my life???'. We'd booked a full day with Nosy Be Adventures, recommended to us by another cruiser. That's how, at about 9 am in the morning, David, Kimi, and I found ourselves paddling a canoe out to a remote village in Lokobe Reserve. Inaccessible by car, our guides had an outrigger canoe ready for us. Audience participation required! This was just the start of the day. We hiked, saw lemurs and snakes, ate Malagasy food, and watched a stunning sunset.Madagascar certainly requires an adventurous spirit!@achimasrak_94 #madagascar #lokobe #nosybe
